Description
This free gross and fine motor activity can be used with a group or individuals, during occupational therapy sessions, circle time, or as a transition between activities. Incorporating movement can help students focus prior to engaging in tabletop tasks. Doing activities with weight on their hands prepares the whole body for fine motor skills.
Suggestions for Use:
- Show the card and have students imitate it (such as “Simon Says”)
- Show the card and have students do a parade
- Have the students race each other
- Do the crab walk from one area to the table
- Practice fine motor skills while decorating the crab template
- Modify crab walk as needed
- Start while seated on the floor and place hands behind them
- Bend knees and place gentle pressure through the knees towards the floor (pressure goes through the calf not hip)
- Prompt student to “lift” their bottoms.
- When they can lift by themselves, progress to moving one hand at a time (start with just moving the hand and not trying to move the body)
